Time and cost are the two most frequent objections I hear as to why someone can’t prioritize their health. I want to just look at the cost objection and help you overcome it. I want you to see that ignoring your health and fitness is far more costly long term than taking ownership of it. Let’s look at a few of the top causes of preventable death in the United States and their associated costs after insurance:

1. Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It accounts for approximately 20% of all deaths, with 695,547 deaths recorded in 2021. The economic burden of heart disease is pretty massive:

  • The total cost of heart disease to the U.S. healthcare system is estimated at $254 billion per year.
  • An additional $168 billion is lost in workplace productivity due to heart disease.
  • After accounting for insurance coverage, individuals with cardiovascular disease spend an average of $19,000 per year on heart-related healthcare.

2. Cancer

Cancer is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It accounts for a significant portion of premature deaths and carries a heavy economic burden:

  • The cost of cancer care is expected to reach more than $240 billion by 2030.
  • Individuals with cancer may face out-of-pocket costs exceeding $42,000 per year for treatment and medications, even after insurance coverage.

3. Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases

This category includes conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.

According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic lower respiratory diseases accounted for 147,382 deaths in the United States.

Key points about chronic lower respiratory diseases:

  • CLRD is a group of lung conditions that block airflow and cause breathing-related problems.
  • Smoking is a massive risk factor for developing CLRD.
  • The percentage of preventable premature deaths from CLRD decreased from 2010 through 2019 but increased slightly in 2022.
  • Rural counties tend to have higher percentages of preventable premature deaths from CLRD compared to urban areas.
  • CLRD deaths decreased during 2017-2020 but showed an increase in 2022.
  • Annual after insurance costs are around 6k.

It's important to note that many deaths from chronic lower respiratory diseases are considered preventable through measures such as quitting smoking, improved air quality, and better management of existing respiratory conditions through diet and exercise.

You may be reading this and thinking that you’re okay because you don’t have any of these conditions, but the leading causes of these conditions are high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity, sedentary life, poor diet, and chronic stress. When it comes to metabolic health, only about 10% of people can check off all these boxes without medical intervention:

  1. Blood pressure under 120/80
  2. Fasted blood glucose under 100/HA1C under 5.7
  3. Triglycerides under 150
  4. Waist size under 35in for female and 40 for male
  5. HDL above 40 for men and 50 for women

This means the majority of people are on a pathway to disease and serious out of pocket expense. The average annual cost associated with the conditions above is $22,000.
